With the rapid growth in the English language, the English essay has become an almost permanent fixture in most schools. Like every other essay, a good English essay has to adhere to the standard format that is prescribed for most essays. The first part of the English essay will normally be the introduction. In the introduction, the reader of the essay is given a glimpse of what the essay is all about. The reader of the essay is made aware of what the subject of the essay is. In addition, the introductory bit of the essay is supposed to let the reader know how the paper is organized, how the subject of interest is going to be handled, and will briefly state the main points of the essay. The last paragraph of the introductory section of the English essay will typically have a thesis statement which is basically a statement that lays out the argument behind the essay (McLaren, 2003).
Once the introduction is complete, the English essay will then proceed to the main body of the essay. It is in the body of the essay that the main points are discussed. Where the essay is a short essay, each paragraph within the body will discuss a specific point but in the event that the essay is long, the body may be divided into sections with each section making an argument for a specific point (McLaren, 2003).
To make the points convincing to the reader, they should be backed with conclusive evidence. This is usually done through quoting authoritative figures on the subject or by citing credible statistics, facts and figures. The points should then b related to the thesis. The conclusion is the last bit of the English essay. It basically summarizes the main points of the essay and restates the thesis (McLaren, 2003).
