A scholarship essay is usually part of the scholarship application process. It is normally used to by an applicant to convince the organization or institution of the applicant’s competency. Most importantly, it is used to test the writing prowess (or lack thereof) of the applicants. In many cases, the institution provides a list of topics from which students can choose. In other cases, the students are given the freedom to write an essay about a topic of their choice.
The applicant should use the essay to illustrate to the institution his or her special qualities, talents and gifts. In short, it is used to convince the institution that the applicant is special and why the organization should award him with the scholarship. It is therefore important for the applicant to highlight his or her extracurricular activities and major accomplishments.
