The research paper consists of several parts, all of which flow logically and point to a central overriding theme that forms the subject of the paper. The first part of a research paper is usually the introduction. For an effective research paper, this part should be written in an engaging manner that invites the reader to want to continue reading on. The introductory part of a research paper will generally introduce the reader to the problem. This part would also include a challenging thesis statement - a one sentence claim about the subject that others should be able to dispute.
Having dispensed with this part of the research paper, the writer can now shift his attention to the next part, which is the body. The body is the main part of the research paper. In this part, the research writer presents his arguments. These arguments are aimed at reinforcing the writer’s position as expressed in the thesis statement in the introductory part of the research paper. For a convincing argument, the research writer should be able to cite facts, figures, and to quote recognized authorities who have conclusively dealt with the matter. In addition, in this part of the research report, the research writer should be able to anticipate any opposing arguments, acknowledge them, and show why his arguments are more valid than these.
This part of the research report should be written in an interesting and persuasive way. The last part of the research report is generally the conclusion. In the conclusion, a summary of the facts is presented, and conclusions are drawn. The conclusion should be clear, forceful and should lead the reader to towards taking a certain action. It basically should reaffirm the claims made in the thesis statement at the introductory part of the research report.
In addition to these, other parts of a research report include the abstract, and the research outline.
