The essay outline is composed of three general parts. These consist of the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The main ideas of the essay are contained in the introductory part of the essay outline. This part of the outline also mentions the arguments that shall be advanced in the essay, with the last paragraph of the introduction consisting of the thesis statement. The thesis statement expresses the main argument of the essay.
The main arguments are expressed in detail in the second part of the essay outline, which is the body. Supporting evidence is adduced and counterarguments reasoned against. Examples, quotations, and analysis are typically used in this section of the essay outline. Transitions and subject headings may be used.
The conclusion is the last part of the essay outline. Here, key points are summarized and the thesis statement is restated.
