The personal essay is used to ‘sell’ a person to people who do not know him on a personal level. As an example, it is used by admissions committees of many colleges and graduate schools to determine whether a particular student qualifies to be offered a place in a particular program or not.
To be able to score points with the admissions committee, your personal essay must be able to grab attention in the opening paragraph. It must be written in a gripping manner, be positive, factual, complete, and free of typing, grammar and punctuation errors.
While giving a peek into your character, the personal essay must also tie you to the college. It should include such details as your achievements, skills, how you came to learn about the college, your career objectives, and what makes you stand out.
