Like most essays, the research essay consists of three parts: the introduction, the body and the conclusion. In the introduction, the research essay establishes the research topic to the audience, and outlines the perspective to be followed by essay.
A clear and forceful thesis, which summarizes in a single sentence the main perspective of the research essay is usually included in the introduction. The arguments to support the thesis usually follow, and are placed within the body. Supporting evidence must also be adduced to strengthen the position taken by the research essay. The research essay must thus provide proper documentation for any claims made.
The research essay may follow one of the various formats available such as MLA, APA, or Harvard. A conclusion, which brings the essay to a close, should be provided and normally restates the thesis.
