Misconceptions About Diets and Healthy Nutrition
The eternal desire of people to be healthy and workable has led to the fact that people started to pay much attention to physical activities and nutrition as one of the most important components of a healthy lifestyle. A correctly balanced diet is the most important condition for good efficiency and health. With food, a person receives all the necessary elements that provide the body with the energy necessary for growth and maintenance of the vital functions of the body.
There are many myths around topics related to healthy diets, food composition, vegetarianism, or problems with excess weight. People frequently have the wrong information about what is a healthy lifestyle and have illusions about sodium glutamate, GMOs, and vegetarianism. This essay will cover the most common misconceptions.
1. An unhealthy diet is the only cause of obesity.
There is no single cause for the development of obesity, as it may be caused by a large number of reasons such as genetic predisposition or diseases of the endocrine system. For example: diseases of the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, genital, pituitary, and hypothalamus anomalies. Age plays an important role in affecting obesity – for example, the following age changes among women: menopause or the premenopausal period, pregnancy, and childbirth. All these hormonal changes can play a great role in leading to being overweight.
It should be taken into account that the accumulation of excess fat in the body is realized only through food consumption. There is no other mechanism that can deliver excess calories to the body. People who suffer from severe forms of obesity have an addiction to food with signs of pathological dependence. An analogy can be drawn with this dependency and drug addiction, alcohol abuse, and smoking. For such people normal portions of food is insufficient, and a person begins to consume more products in order to get satisfaction from food. Ninety-five percent of people with obesity are people who simply overeat and have low physical activity.
2. Glutamate sodium is dangerous.
This is an overstatement of the issue. Glutamate is the main neurotransmitter in the brain. Neurons that synthesize and isolate this substance transmit the main flow of information: sensory, memory-related, and others. In addition, glutamate is the most widespread food amino acid. This means that the body receives similar molecules with proteins of milk, bread, and meat. Glutamate that comes with food doesn’t reach the brain due to glial cells of the nervous system named oligodendrocytes. They tightly surround the vessels, controlling the movement of substances from the blood to neurons. If the brain had no defense, any eaten steak or cinnamon roll would cause an abnormal activation of the nerve structures. However, if a person will consume several grams of pure glutamate sodium that has not come gradually during the assimilation of proteins, it may cause delirium.
Why should we eat glutamate sodium? The fact is that the human organism is not indifferent to this molecule. Evolution has formed a gustatory system for the chemical analysis of food and glutamate sodium plays the role of a sign that food is rich with proteins that are absolutely necessary to the body. In this regard, consuming glutamate sodium, humans are genetically programmed with the mechanism of experiencing positive emotions. As a result, glutamate sodium is the most important food supplement which was discovered by Japanese physiologists in seaweed and Japanese broth. These investigations lead to the discovery of a new type of taste called “umami.” Almost immediately glutamate was used in its pure form (E620-629), added to a variety of foods. There is still a belief that glutamate causes a lot of problems with health, but it’s an exaggeration, because during the day with an ordinary meal an adult person consumes approximately 5-10 grams of glutamate sodium. Only overconsumption of glutamate sodium may cause problems with health.
3. GMO vegetables and fruits are not healthy to eat.
If a tomato has a “plastic” taste, it does not mean that it is genetically modified. Today, there are a wide variety of technologies of growing and harvesting vegetables and fruits. Often, organic products have little difference in flavor and taste from non-organic.
To feed humanity scientists look for new intensive technologies. Delicate and soft tomatoes can not be transported long distances, and this means that tomatoes must be with a thick skin and equal size. The same situation had occurred with many other vegetables and fruits.
The first wave of genetically modified plants was aimed to attract more farmers. They were resistant to pests and herbicides, they had a later maturation period, and the consumer did not notice any special changes.
Now there is a second or even a third wave of modified plants. For example, they have changed the composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Including such plants in everyday diet, a person can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The change of sugar content and sugar substitutes also has changed the natural nutritional value. Such plants are aimed at improving quality of life for people.
4. Vegetarianism is the only way for healthy life.
It is scientifically proven that people who abandon food of animal origin rarely suffer from obesity and high cholesterol. Consequently, they have a significantly lower risk of developing cardiovascular, as well as cerebrovascular diseases, including strokes, heart attacks, and coronary heart disease.
From the other side, some essential fatty acids are absent in plant foods or are kept inadequate, and some useful substances from plant foods are digested much worse than from animal products. Scientific research shows that many children who grow up in families of vegetarians have anemia and lack of protein.
People who have excluded from the diet all products of animal origin can develop diseases such as dysbiosis (violation of intestinal microflora), hypovitaminosis (lack of vitamins), and protein deficiency. Also, vegetarians are prone to diseases of the musculoskeletal system and osteoporosis.
Nutritionists has reached consensus in this issue: nutrition should be balanced and rational. To normally work, develop, and live, the human body needs a sufficient number of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and micro and macroelements. Certainly, it is useful for everyone to eat more vegetables, fruits, and avoid abundance of meat dishes. But is it worth giving up meat, fish, and eggs? The solution must be individual. In any case, it is not enough simply to exclude from the diet products of animal origin. First, an appropriate replacement among plant products must be chosen. Today, there are special nutritional supplements that can replenish the lack of necessary nutrients to people who choose vegetarianism.
