“The Little Prince” is the most famous work of Antoine de Saint-Exupery. At first glance, this is just a fairy tale for children, telling about the prince that has quarreled with a flower and started wandering on different planets. But after reading the story you understand that “The Little Prince” is not a fairy tale, but a philosophical parable that tells about the most important and complex things related to human life.
In his work, Antoine de Saint – Exupery touches many problems. The most important of them is the problem of responsibility – the responsibility of a person for his or her actions, words, thoughts. The narrator was taught by his young friend called Little Prince. He is the lord of the whole planet and he felt a great responsibility for the entire planet. No wonder he tells the narrator: “When you’ve finished your own toilet in the morning, then it is time to attend to the toilet of your planet, just so, with the greatest care. ”
How lovingly and carefully the prince cleaned up his planet when he decided to embark on a journey with migratory birds: “On the morning of his departure he put his planet in perfect order. He carefully cleaned out his active volcanoes.” He also had one volcano that was extinct. But, as he said “One never knows.”
But the prince also had something to learn. The greatest lesson of responsibility was given to him by a Fox who asked the prince to tame him. The Fox explained that only by taming someone, one can find a friend and fill his life with meaning: “If, for example, you come at four o’clock in the afternoon, then at three o’clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o’clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am!”
It is not so easy to tame someone. This is an art that is not given to everyone. He acquires a close friend, who becomes his only companion in the whole world.
Having learned this, the prince realized that his rose, which has disappointed him, was the best, because she was “filled” with his attention, his patience, his life: “But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or ever sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose.”
But that’s not all. Fox has told the prince another important secret. Having tamed someone, a person bears responsibility for it. Always, all life, any minute, and anywhere. Attachment is a great happiness, but also a great responsibility. A being that has become attached to you is completely open to you, depends on you, needs you. Having earned its love, you are responsible for it, so you must always take care, protect, pay attention.
This would seem a common truth. Everyone knows about it, but it is often forgotten. Each of us has people that we have tamed. First of all, these are our parents, friends, close people, children, animals that live with us. And on a global scale – it’s the whole planet, the universe on which we are actively acting, transforming everything around. And every day, every second, it is important to remember the words of a red fox who once told Little Prince: “But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. ”
These words helped the Little Prince understand how he loves his defenseless weak rose and return to it. These words are spoken for us by the narrator, recalling that the most important things in life are the simplest. And one of them is the thought of the global responsibility of each of us.
